Betty Jack's Race Recap: The Rockingham 400

Hey, y'all gay Nascar fans! After a week when we had to listen to SO MANY gasbags who know nothing about racing give their opinions about the "controversial" finish at Daytona, it was a pleasure to get back to racing! (Listen, y'all: Mikey won the 500 fair and square -- OK, Jr. helped a little -- but there was no way they should have tried to string that race out all night, what with the way it was raining! The speedway is no place to get sloppy!

Well anyway, up at Rockingham, the first shock was seeing that adorable Jamie McMurray raise his cap at qualifying to show a fabulous new bleached blond spiky haircut! (If you visited the site this weekend, you know that I remported this Breaking News before ANY other racing site!)

But Jamie wasn't just about making a fashion statement -- he was in the race to win! Jamie had a terrific Sunday in that 42 car. With 78 laps to go, Jamie was chasing Rusty Wallace in the #2 car and fellow DeVine 91/2 team member Mark Martin in the #6, earning the praise of the boys in the FOX booth. With 51 to go, Jamie passed Rusty on the inside to claim 5th spot, and that's where he finished the day.

The real battle, of course, was between the #97 of Kurt Busch and the #88 of Dale Jarrett. After leading earlier, Kurt took a masterful hold of it in laps 261-299 and 310-383. But a hard-charging Jarrett commanded 384-388. Kurt fought back like a champ to lead one more lap (389) but Jarrett passed him again, and Kurt's speed rush was over.

During these last laps, of course, we were just screaming, with our girlfriend Cherrell, of TV's "American Music Show," for Kurt to pull it out one more time and defeat Jarrett, but it was not to be. Better luck next week, team!

But on Monday, we had another reason to celebrate as Jamie McMurray absolutely dominated in the Busch race, delayed by rain from Saturday. Jamie led all but five of the 197 laps and took the checkers! Only Mikey mounted a serious challenge, and after giving up the lead, Jamie beat him off pit road to regain and hold the lead.

See y'all at Vegas for some more hot race boy action!

Love,
Betty Jack DeVine
