Betty Jack's Track Yack: The Bristol 500

As usual, the Bristol "bullring" brought out more beatin' and bangin' than a Bel Ami video! They say Bristol is one of the very most fun tracks to attend; I'm afraid I haven't had the pleasure. We'll all look forward to that night race at Bristol in August, even though Nascar will be back on horrible, horrible NBC by then, and we'll be having to look at the TV picture and listen to the MRN coverage on the radio.

As always, good ole Darryl Waltrip was good for some laughs. We started to hyperventilate when DW, while watching Jr., told how to pass at Bristol: "you open it up at the bottom and then stick it right on in there." Another funny moment was when Kenny Schrader made room for himself in a scary pass and, referring to the obnoxious Carrot Top on Kenny's hood, DW said, "Woo, ole Carrot Sticks is all drawed up after that one!"

On Bristol Sunday, I have to say, I missed a lot of the race because I was doing final preparations for the glamorous party Dixie Richardson and I hosted for our dear friend Susan Archie, who recently won the Grammy Award for box set design in New York City, and was shown on the international broadcast! Can you imagine? We shouted and jubliated until we were hoarse! Thanks to everyone who helped us honor Sue -- especially her girlfriend Janet Smith and our friends Robert Coddington, James Schatz, Randy Wilder and Chis Tate, who drove here all the way from Chicago just to attend! We are so proud of Sue Pie and her terrific accomplishments.

It's nice to have Nascar to distract us while our unelected president plunges us into this awful war. Please do whatever you can do -- write, call, march, shout, and by all means pray -- to stop this dreadful slaughter and waste.

We'll see y'all for the Texas race this Sunday!

Love,
Betty Jack DeVine
